This report presents an evaluation of the Health Quality & Safety Commission-led safe use of opioids national collaborative. The collaborative was part of the Commission's medication safety programme that aims to greatly reduce the number of New Zealanders harmed each year by medication errors in our hospitals, general practices, aged residential care facilities and across the entire health and disability sector.
The goal of the collaborative was to reduce opioid-related harm in DHB hospitals, create care bundles for the safe use of opioids, and build capability in medication safety and improvement science.
The results are positive and demonstrate improvements in quality improvement capability and medication safety processes, and a reduction in opioid-related harm.
