National Mortality Review Function
The National Mortality Review Committee (NMRC) is the primary advisor to the board of Te Tāhū Hauora, Health Quality & Safety Commission (Te Tāhū Hauora) on avoidable mortality.
As defined within section 82(2) of Pae Ora (Healthy Future) Act, 2022, the NMRC is responsible for establishing a strategic plan for the review of specific classes of deaths of people, or deaths of people of specific classes, with a view to reducing the number of deaths of those classes or people. In March 2024, the NMRC set out four new areas of focus for mortality review. They are:
a. Annual reporting on avoidable mortality
b. Experience of avoidable mortality in families
c. Pacific maternal and perinatal health
d. Diabetes

The function of the SME group is three-fold: ensure the quality and robustness of the methodological approach for undertaking the work; provide insights and support the production of outputs that will impact on avoidable mortality; develop implementable recommendations from the outputs produced.
We are specifically interested in receiving expressions of interest from people with skills and experience in public health, health equity, health systems policy, statistical modelling and implementation science backgrounds.
